Spinosaurus

...back

Half dinosaur, half sailing boat

Spinosaurus is possibly the largest theropod ever to have lived. Unfortunately the most complete fossil of spinosaurus ever discovered was destroyed by allied bombing in the Second World War, meaning more recent research has been conducted on only partial specimens.

As opposed to many theropods, spinosaurus had a long snout, with nostrils set back towards it's eyes. It also had straight teeth without the serations which were common with other large theropods. These two factors together suggest that at least part of spinosaurus's feeding relied on it catching fish. This likely to have been from the waterside or in shallower water, with analysis suggesting spinosaurus would unlikely have been a good swimmer.

Spinosaurus had a destinctive 'sail' which ran along it's back. Whilst the word 'sail' may suggest a connection to water, it was in fact most likely to be used for controlling temperature or as a display to other spinosaurus.

"Possibly the largest carnivore to walk the planet, definitely the most unstable in crosswinds"
