Protoceratops

...back

Like a triceratops, without the horns

Due to the finding of a numerous well preserved remains, paleontologists have been able to learn a lot about protoceratops. One example of such remains is the protoceratops found alongside a velociraptor, possibly buried alive whilst mid-fight, discovered in the Gobi Desert (1971).

The name protoceratops means 'first horned face'. By the time protoceratops was discovered in 1922, paleontologists were already aware of other ceratopsians, for example triceratops which was discovered in 1889. Protoceratops was thought to have been an earlier version of such species.

As with other ceratopsians, protoceratops had a strong beaked jaw and distinctive neck frill. Its neck frill was possibly a defensive measure but more likely used to attract potential partners.

It is thought by some that the finding of protoceratops remains by the Ancient Greeks may have inspired the myth of the griffin.

"Martin Luther King famously pronounced: 'I have a dream'. We can't be sure if a protoceratops ever did."
