Megalosaurus

...back

The one which started it all

In 1824 William Buckland became the first person to name a dinosaur (the megalosaurus), based on a representation created from a few bone fragments. Prior to this dinosaur fossils had been discovered, but no species had been named and accepted by the scientific community. Due to the limited knowledge at the time, various dinosaur remains were initially placed with the megalosaurus, a mistake which is still being corrected today.

Megalosaurus was a two legged meat eating theropod, with small arms and sharp claws. It would likely have combined hunting with scavenging for food, probably including iguanadons.

"Without the megalosaur we wouldn't have the word dinosaur. I wonder what they would have been called if someone else named it instead?"
