Baryonyx

...back

Named after its thumbs

First found in England in 1983, baryonyx was a spinosaurid which roamed the earth in the early cretaceous period. It had a narrow skull and a long snout, similar to that of a modern day crocodile.

Among the remains of baryonyx found, one speciman in particular was useful for establishing a likely diet. It contained the contents of it's final meal: fish.

The named baryonyx comes from the presence of huge thumb claws and strong arms. It's claws could grow up to 30cm (12in) long.

"Finally, one which lived in Britain."
