...backLooked a bit like an armadillo
- Name: Ankylosaurus
- Pronounced: An-KY-lo-saw-rus
- Period: Late Cretaceous
- Name means: Fused lizard
- Length: 10m (33 ft)
- Weight: 5 tons
- Location: North America
One of the biggest ankylosaurs, ankylosaurus had a large body, covered thick skin and armoured plates called scutes.
With a wide beak and small teeth, ankylosaurus would consume around 60kg of foliage a day in order to maintain its bulk. Digestion was probably aided by a large tongue which would manoeuvre food around its mouth before swallowing.
Ankylosaurus is famous for being equipped with a large clubbed tail. This would have been a useful weapon, whether to discourage predators or during squabbles with other members of their own species.
"Despite the all the armour and spikes, ankylosaurus had a soft belly. I wonder if it was ticklish?"
